Jay Kay

Jason Kay was born in Stretford Manchester on 30th December 1969. Jay grew up in Ealing East London. Jay loved listening to lots of 70's music and enjoyed listening to Sly Stone, Gil Scott-Heron, Stevie Wonder and Roy Ayers amongst others in that era.
 
Jay's Mother is Jazz Singer and 70's TV host Karen Kay.
 
Jay had a fight with his mother which left him homeless. He would sleep on park benches and under stairs and delivered pizzas. Jay also worked in a toy warehouse which he says wasn't that entertaining.
 
Jay then started recording demo tapes of himself and enjoyed writing lyrics. Jay had his first audition when he went for the lead singer for band The brand New Heavies but was unsuccessful. 
 
He then got together with Stuart Zender (Bass Guitarist) and they decided to form a band. Then Jay met Toby Smith (Keyboards), Wallis Buchanan (Didgeridoo) and Nick Van Gelder(Drums).

The Band decided on the name Jamiroquai - They got the name from the Native Americans the Iroquai's which are a strong tribe.
 
Then the decided on the word Jam because the music they produced was jamming. So they used the word Jam.Jay and the band then started writing songs and recorded demos.
 
They got their big break when Sony heard their demo of "When you gonna learn". This was a different version to the album version on "Emergency on planet earth album.
 
We all know the rest......
 
Well we all recognise Jay Kay by his soulful voice, funky moves his funky jams and love of hats. He has a huge fan base worldwide and never lets us down when producing new  Singles and albums in Jamiroquai. 
 
He is sooo cool, down-to-earth with his witty sense of humour, love of fast cars and cool dress sense. Jay Kay is a music legend!   

Derrick McKenzie

Derrick McKenzie was born on 27th March 1962. He enjoyed drumming from an early age. Derrick would perform on his Mum's tables, chairs, telephone books and even biscuit tins.
 
Derrick then started jobs which helped him become a better drummer. He then become a full-time drummer in the band Urban Species.
 
He then auditioned for Jamiroquai in 1994 after Nick Van Gelder left the band. As soon as he performed Jay knew he was right for the band.

Derrick was influenced by classic soul artistes. He enjoys the likes of Prince and Patrice Rushen. His favourite drumming hero is Billy Cobham.
 
Derrick is happily married to his wife Anthea and they have a son Kai, and a daughter Jenna.
 
Derrick is one of the most talented drummer in the music business!

Nick Fyffe

Nick Fyffe joined the band in 1998 replacing former band member Stuart Zender. Nick was born and raised in Reading and always wanted to become a musician. Nick played on various instruments, the drums and guitar. He then liked to play bass guitar and became a bass guitarist.
 
Nick was born blind in one eye but he was still ambitious in his future career. Nick as a teen was influenced by 80's hip-hop as well as funky bass lines and bass-heavy electro beats.
 
In 1998 Nick applied to an add in the Melody Maker to be in a Jamiroquai tribute band. While Nick was awaiting for a reply he read that Stuart Zender had actually left the actual band.

Nick started making enquiries for an audition to become the bands new bass guitarist. Soon after he did get an audition for the #1 band Jamiroquai.
 
Nick was so excited that he got an audition for the real band and we all know his audition was a success. Nick then played on the Synkronized tour and the album.      

Sola Akingbola

Sola Akingbola was born in 1965 in Nigeria. He came to the UK when he was a child. Sola was raised in London and has raised his own family in England.
 
He Jamiroquai in 1995 as percussionist. 10 years ago Sola started to take his percussion seriously having spent his time before as a DJ. He used to DJ around London funky clubs.
 
Sola still loves Africa and African music and it is still a strong influence in Sola's life. The Nigerian language itself has an original, musical and rythmic feel.

Sola's likes music from Earth Wind & Fire to Classical composers like Bartok. His hero is Miles Davis. Sola has also played percussion with Jazz guitarist Ronnie Jordan.
 
Sola then met up with Derrick McKenzie and then Sola was asked to join jamiroquai by Jay Kay. His work on stage with the band is fantastic and Sola can be heard on both Travelling Without Moving & Synkronized.

Rob Harris

Rob Harris was born on 27th August in 1971 in Cambridgeshire. He started playing instruments at the tender age of 7. He was a pro at mastering the electric and acoustic guitar whilst listening to The Beatles.
 
Rob has been playing professionally since he was 21 years old, which was the same year he married his wife Stephanie. Rob has toured with many different artists. Rob's main musical influences are The Cruisaders and he adores George Benson amongst others. Rob's biggest inspiration was Jimi Hendrix.

Rob used to sit up until the early hours each night learning all of Jamiroquai older tracks. He then attended an audition in 2000. 
 
Impressed by his talent and getting on with really well from the start, Jay Kay asked Rob to join Jamiroquai permanently. Then the band started recording the new album.
